To most people, the word "dentist" is most often associated with common dental procedures such as fillings, crown, and extractions.   Although these are common procedures offered in most dental offices, there is another side of dentistry that is often overlooked.

Preventative Dentistry

Proper home care is our first line of defense against tooth decay and periodontal disease.  This includes brushing twice a day and flossing once a day.  Preventative dentistry also includes getting your regular cleanings and exams to help maintain optimum oral health.  The American Dental Association recommends that you see your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings.  At Palm Family Dentistry, we place a strong emphasis on regular cleanings and preventative exams.  Regular cleanings and exams allow us to detect dental problems early on before they become truly damaging to your oral health.

Our Preventative Care Services:

  • X-rays – Regular x-rays allow the dentist to see what is happening below the gums and between the teeth.
  • Dental Exam – Exams help to identify problems early on so we can alter at-home care and/or catch problems before they cause irreversible damage.
  • Hygiene Cleaning – Plaque and tartar are major sources of tooth decay and periodontal disease. Our hygienist will properly remove both plaque and tartar from your teeth and polish the surfaces for a cleaner and healthier look.
  • Fluoride Treatment – Depending on your risk for decay, we will complete a fluoride treatment to aid in caries prevention.

Treating Gum Disease

In addition to improving your oral health, preventative dental visits improve your overall health.  If not cleaned regularly by a dental professional, plaque and tartar build-up can lead to Periodontal disease (gum disease).  Periodontal disease has been linked to numerous systemic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes.
