A tooth extraction doesn't have to feel stressful when you know what to expect, what to plan for, and how to take care of yourself afterward. We're providing a step-by-step guide on what to expect from your tooth extraction appointment to help ease your mind on the day of surgery. Here's what you should know.

Preparing for a Tooth Extraction

Our team will provide you with specific guidelines to follow in preparing for your tooth extraction, since every patient's case is unique.

Here are some general guidelines for the day of surgery:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid wearing makeup or jewelry
  • Plan for the day off from work
  • Arrange for transportation to and from, especially if we're using any form of sedation
  • Have post-op supplies ready, such as soft foods

Immediately After Surgery

Plan on resting for the remainder of the day after surgery.

Stopping the bleeding is the priority after oral surgery. You'll bite down on gauze to control the bleeding and notify your dentist if the bleeding doesn't stop.

Warm salt water rinses are soothing after surgery. You can also use ice for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to reduce swelling.

Post-Op Instructions

A blood clot needs to form over the extraction site to promote healing. Avoid smoking or drinking through a straw for the first 72 hours after surgery to prevent dislodging the blood clot. This will help you avoid a condition called dry socket, which can be uncomfortable. Additionally, refrain from engaging in any vigorous exercise for the first 72 hours following surgery.

Brush your teeth as you usually would after surgery, being careful and gentle around the extraction site.

Stick to soft foods for the first few days, consumed at room temperature. Here are some ideas:

  • Applesauce
  • Oatmeal
  • Soup
  • Smoothies
  • Scrambled eggs
