Man with severe tooth pain

For those who've experienced a severe toothache, few other kinds of pain are more debilitating and as disruptive in every facet of life.

For example, tooth pain may shatter your concentration, hurting your performance at home or work. But a more pronounced issue may be your inability to eat because chewing hurts too much. It's easy to see how quickly a toothache could explode into a whole host of problems, which is why you should treat it immediately.

At Palm Family Dentistry, we proudly offer emergency dental services and same-day appointments wherever possible. Our goal in every situation is to save your natural tooth, so you can rest assured that if we recommend an emergency tooth extraction, it's because we have exhausted all other options. And as a dentist in Prairieville, we want you to know a few important things about this misunderstood dental procedure.

Why You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

Your teeth work like a team, so losing even one teammate leaves a missing link and a chink in your armor. But sometimes, the best thing to do is remove a tooth to protect the rest of the team.

If you suffer from the following, Dr. Palm may recommend removing a tooth:

  • Significant tooth damage that a dental crown or filling cannot fix
  • A broken or fractured tooth
  • A deep tooth infection beyond root canal therapy
  • Advanced periodontal, or gum disease-causing loose and shifting teeth

Two Types of Dental Extractions

Though numerous circumstances may lead to tooth extraction, the procedure will be one of two types: a simple or surgical extraction. We perform a simple extraction when enough natural tooth remains for us to remove the tooth intact. Then, we can usually numb the area and pull the tooth directly.

In cases where your tooth is broken off at the gum line or lacks the structure to remain in one piece, or if you have impacted wisdom teeth, the extraction process can be a little more complex. The good news is that Dr. Palm has the skills to perform all types of extractions, so you can work with our team for the whole process instead of being referred.
